Born
in Ottawa, Ontario, Luc Saucier fell in love with
calligraphy during his early college years of
classical voice training in Montreal. A self-taught
scribe, he attended workshops by Donald Jackson,
Julian Waters, John Stevens and Thomas Ingmire. He draws inspiration from a wide range
of styles and periods, most notably heraldry,
illuminating, traditional and contemporary calligraphy.
Since 1991 he is the official calligrapher of
Montreal's Chapelle historique du Bon-Pasteur. In
1995, he initiated the Chapelle's first calligraphy
exhibition, featuring works of La Société des
Calligraphe's members. His works feature in the book ABC
Canada (Arbor Studio Press, 1996) and in the
American periodical Somerset Studio (Spring
1999).
Apart
from carrying out private commissions, he
calligraphied and illuminated protocolary documents
for the International Civil Aviation Organization
(1996), Culture et Communications Québec (1998), the
Huron-wendat Nation (2000) and the City of Montreal
(2001).
A teacher at Westmount's Visual Arts Center since
1996, he held his first solo exhibition at the
Chapelle in February 1999. He also participated in
several projects with Bookbinder Odette Drapeau of La
Tranchefile. Today a freelance calligrapher,
singer and animator, Luc Saucier is also a member of
la Société des Calligraphes and of Quebec's
Regroupement des artistes en arts visuels (RAAV).
